Monsoon Session: Parliament Expected to Witness Uproar Over SIR Issue; Key Government Business on Agenda
The Monsoon Session of Parliament has faced multiple adjournments as the Opposition persists in demanding a debate on the ongoing SIR in Bihar. Leaders of the INDIA bloc have staged protests on the matter, criticising the government for avoiding a discussion.
On Sunday, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien remarked that the BJP is “afraid” to hold a discussion on the SIR.
“The SIR (Silent Invisible Rigging) vote theft is a topic that can easily be discussed in both Houses. BJP is afraid and is causing disruptions,” the TMC MP stated on X.
“Starting Monday, August 4, we will provide the nervous Modi alliance with free tutorials on Parliamentary rules and procedures to demonstrate how this can be discussed,” he further said.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday referred to a ruling by former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar, stating that the functioning of the Election Commission cannot be discussed in Parliament.
So far, the Monsoon Session has made minimal progress, mainly due to continuous protests by the INDIA bloc, who are steadfast in their demand for a discussion on the issue.
As part of their ongoing protest, the Opposition is scheduled to conduct a march to the Election Commission’s office in Delhi on the morning of August 8.
