Pooja is the daughter of Ganesan and Tamil Priya, a resident of the Eelam Tamil Rehabilitation Camp in Kumbidipoondi. The 21-year-old was staying at the house of her maternal grandmother Selvi in ​​Kalampur, Tiruvannamalai district and studying nursing in Vellore. At that time, Pooja fell in love with Saranraj, the son of Ramakrishnan and Sivajini, who were living in the same camp.
Pooja’s great-grandmother came to know that the two were dating. Saranraj opposed their relationship, saying that he was 2 years younger than her. Following this, it is said that Pooja left home 10 days ago and went with Saranraj. A complaint was filed at the Gummidipoondi and Kalampur police stations.
In this situation, the couple appeared at the Kalampur police station seeking protection. After the police called both the families and held talks, the woman’s family took them in a car, saying that they would take their children and get them married in a village. On the way, they parked their car at Arani and tried to beat Saranraj with the help of additional relatives who were standing there, which caused a commotion.
When Saranraj refused to leave his beloved wife and became stubborn, the woman’s family scolded the groom and his relatives and chased them away.
The mother, who grabbed the yellow thali lying around Pooja’s neck and tried to take her daughter home. But Pooja refused to leave her husband and screamed.
At one point, the groom’s father tried to attack the bride’s family. Pooja’s mother scolded her severely about raising the child, saying, “I don’t want a girl from your house,” and the groom’s family left in anger.
Despite all the arguments she made with the bride’s family, they were determined to drag their daughter home. But Pooja, crying and insisting that she was going with her husband, was taken to her grandmother’s house in Kalampur. Pooja, who was suffering from longing for her husband, poured petrol on herself and set herself on fire in front of many people at home. She also burnt herself in the fire when she hugged her mother who tried to save her.
Both the mother and daughter were admitted to the Chennai Keelapakkam Government Hospital with severe burns. Pooja died tragically without any treatment. Pooja’s mother Tamil Priya is undergoing treatment with 40 percent burns. The Kalampur police are investigating the incident by obtaining death certificates from both of them.
