Mysterious “Crying Disease” Spreads in Congo – Over 60 Dead, 1,000 Infected

Outbreak of a New Mysterious Disease in Congo

A new mysterious disease, named “Crying Disease”, is rapidly spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo, causing severe concern among health officials. So far, over 60 people have died, and more than 1,000 individuals have been infected in remote areas of the country.

Origin and Spread of the Disease

In December, Congo had already reported cases of a mysterious illness called “Disease X”, which primarily affected children. Now, new outbreaks of Crying Disease have been reported in the remote villages of Boloko and Bomé in the northwestern region.

Possible Causes and Symptoms

  • Consumption of Bat Meat: Health officials suspect that in Boloko, some individuals ate bat meat, which may have triggered the outbreak.
  • Early Symptoms:
    • Fever, vomiting, body pain
    • Internal bleeding, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst
    • In children, continuous crying and bloody vomiting

WHO’s Response and Precautionary Measures

  • Medical Assistance: The World Health Organization (WHO) has sent medical teams with test kits and emergency supplies.
  • Quarantine Measures: Infected individuals must be isolated to prevent further spread.
  • Unknown Origin: Experts are still unable to identify the exact cause or source of this new virus.

Global Concern and Potential Threat

The rapid spread of Crying Disease has raised alarms globally. Health experts fear this could be another emerging virus outbreak, similar to COVID-19 or MPOX.

To prevent further escalation, African health authorities are increasing surveillance and taking precautionary measures to contain the disease before it becomes a larger crisis.
