Nagercoil: BMS Members Protest Against DMK Government by Singing Bhajans

In Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district, members of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) staged a protest against the DMK government. The protest was held in response to the government’s failure to fill vacant positions in the Tamil Nadu transport department and its practice of appointing drivers and conductors on a contract basis.

Protest in Front of the Collector’s Office

The demonstration took place in front of the Nagercoil District Collector’s office, where hundreds of workers gathered to voice their dissatisfaction. Protesters raised slogans demanding that the government fulfill its responsibility of providing employment in state-run transport services and ensuring job security for workers.

Singing Bhajans as a Form of Protest

What made this protest unique was that the demonstrators expressed their dissent by singing bhajans (devotional songs). While chanting, they questioned, “What happened to the promises made by the government?” This form of protest, blending religious expression with political dissent, caught public attention.

Demands of the Protesters

The key demands raised by the protesters were:

  1. The Tamil Nadu government must immediately fill the vacant positions in the transport department.
  2. The practice of hiring drivers and conductors on a contractual basis should be stopped.
  3. The government must ensure job security for transport workers.
  4. The ruling party should fulfill its election promises.

State Government’s Response

The protest has sparked discussions in political circles. The DMK government maintains that it has a structured plan to address employment issues in the transport sector. However, BMS members claim that these promises have not been acted upon.

As of now, the state government has not issued a direct response to the protest. However, the demands raised by the workers are expected to influence political discourse in the coming days.
