The beautiful Nandi statue discovered in the inner precincts of the Kumbakonam Adi Kumbeswarar Temple in Thanjavur district is a significant archaeological find. This statue, made of black stone, is believed to have been crafted during the Chola period.
The Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, located in the heart of Kumbakonam, is over 1500 years old and is renowned for its association with the famous Mahamagham festival. Currently, restoration works are being carried out at the temple. As part of these works, a drainage system is being installed in the second prakara (enclosure) of the temple. During the excavation for this, a stunning Nandi statue was discovered.
The Nandi statue is 3 feet tall and 2.5 feet long, made from black stone with intricate carvings. Part of the statue appears slightly tilted, adding to its historical charm. The carvings on the statue are beautiful, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. It is believed that this statue may have been sculpted during the Chola dynasty, known for its artistic and architectural excellence.
