Napoli’s Scott McTominay Likely To Be Nominated For 2025 Ballon d’Or: Report
Scott McTominay is likely to receive his first-ever Ballon d’Or nomination after an outstanding season with Napoli, where he played a key role in their Serie A title win.
Napoli’s midfield star Scott McTominay is reportedly set to earn his maiden Ballon d’Or nomination, following an exceptional 2024/25 season in Italy.
As per reports by the Daily Mail and SportBible, if confirmed, McTominay will join an elite list of players competing for football’s most prestigious individual honour—a remarkable turnaround for a player whose switch from Manchester United to Napoli last summer surprised many across Europe.
At 28, McTominay took a bold decision by leaving his childhood club Manchester United to sign a four-year deal with Napoli. What followed turned out to be a career-defining move.
Under the leadership of manager Antonio Conte, McTominay thrived—scoring 13 goals and providing six assists in 39 appearances across all tournaments.
More importantly, his contributions were vital to Napoli’s historic Serie A title win—their fourth ever. For his efforts, McTominay was awarded the Serie A Player of the Year title and became an instant fan favourite in Campania.
In an interview with talkSPORT last month, McTominay expressed admiration for the Napoli fans:
“The supporters here are truly special. The passion they show week in and week out—whether we’re playing at home or away—is something I’ve never experienced before.”
Ballon d’Or Process and Timeline
Although McTominay’s nomination hasn’t yet been officially confirmed by France Football—the organisation that conducts the Ballon d’Or—the 30-player shortlist is expected to be announced in September, ahead of the awards ceremony in October in Paris.
The shortlist is prepared by France Football’s editorial board, along with former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba and a guest journalist. After the list is finalised, votes are cast by international journalists from the top 100 FIFA-ranked countries, in addition to votes from national team coaches and captains.
Top Contenders
Ousmane Dembélé is currently the frontrunner among bookmakers, owing to his crucial role in PSG’s UEFA Champions League win. Young talent Lamine Yamal is also considered a strong contender after a breakout season with Barcelona, where he helped the team win the La Liga title and reach the Champions League semi-finals.
