The Central Government has recently reconstituted the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) by issuing an official order. This move comes at a critical time, following the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. The NSAB plays a crucial role in advising the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on issues related to national security and strategic interests.
The restructured board now includes individuals with significant experience in defence, intelligence, and diplomacy. Former RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) chief Alok Joshi has been appointed as the chairperson of the NSAB. His appointment signals a renewed focus on external intelligence and strategic analysis, especially in the face of growing cross-border threats.
The newly formed advisory board comprises:
- Three former senior military officials
- Two retired IPS officers
- One former IFS (Indian Foreign Service) officer
These members bring deep expertise in military operations, internal security, and foreign policy, which is expected to enhance the board’s capacity to provide comprehensive and practical advice to the government.
The reconstitution of the NSAB is being seen as a direct response to the security challenges posed by the Pahalgam attack and the broader geopolitical tensions with Pakistan. It also aligns with India’s broader national security agenda, which includes dealing with terrorism, border management, cyber threats, and strategic defence partnerships.
Under Alok Joshi’s leadership, the board is expected to:
- Offer timely assessments and recommendations on emerging threats
- Guide the government in formulating counter-terrorism policies
- Contribute to the strengthening of internal and external security frameworks
- Monitor developments in China, Afghanistan, and Pakistan
- Address challenges in maritime security, space defence, and cyber warfare
This strategic reshuffle reflects the Indian government’s intent to stay ahead of evolving threats and adopt a proactive, technology-driven approach to national security. It also reinforces the role of experienced officials in shaping long-term security policies and maintaining peace and stability in the region.
