AIADMK co-ordinator O. Panneerselvam has urged Chief Minister MK Stalin not to allow the Oil and Gas Authority to build 15 new wells in Cuddalore and Ariyalur districts. Opposition leader Edappadi Palanisamy has urged the legislature not to allow hydrocarbon projects in the Ariyalur district, O. Panneerselvam has issued a separate statement. Opposition Deputy Leader of the Opposition O. Panneerselvam said in a statement that hydrocarbons under the Central Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Fearing that projects like methane will affect their livelihoods, farmers, agricultural workers and fishermen in the Cauvery Delta are waging a series of struggles against it.
In this context, the Central Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued an auction notice on 10-6-2021 for the extraction of hydrocarbons in the Pudukottai district, North Street, located in the Cauvery drainage area, in violation of the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Protected Agricultural Zone Development Act, 2020.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has also written a letter to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India protesting against this. I issued a detailed statement on 14-06-2021 objecting to this and requested the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to take immediate action to cancel the notification of the Central Auction Petroleum and Gas Ministry and to direct the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India directly to them. Protests took place in Pudukkottai district, North Street. The peasants made it clear that they could not give up their lands in those struggles.
Until this issue is resolved, the Oil and Gas Authority has requested the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (State Environment Impact Assessment Authority) in a letter dated 15-6-2021 seeking environmental clearance to construct five wells in Cuddalore district and ten wells in Ariyalur district for a total of 15 wells to ascertain whether there is hydrocarbon. This action of the Oil and Gas Authority is like pouring vinegar on a burn.
It is the agricultural activities in and around the Cauvery Delta that ensure the food security of Tamil Nadu. Projects such as non-agricultural hydrocarbons and methane not only affect agriculture and threaten food security, but also permanently destroy fertile lands and render groundwater unusable.
Apart from this, other non-agricultural projects are located in the countryside in a way that offends the emotions that make the industry a livelihood. All political parties in Tamil Nadu and all parties, including farmers, are adamant that non-agricultural activities should not take place in the Delta region and surrounding districts in order to protect the livelihood of the agrarian industry and the agrarian elite.
Therefore, out of respect for the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu, the Central Ministry of Petroleum and Gas should take steps to withdraw the auction notice for the extraction of hydrocarbons in the North Street area of Pudukottai District and not allow the Oil and Gas Authority to construct 15 new wells in the Cuddalore and Ariyalur districts, stressing that Tamil Nadu does not need such projects. AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam has made a request to the Tamil Nadu government on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu.
