PM Modi, Uzbek President Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthen Strategic Partnership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke over phone with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, reviewing progress in key areas of bilateral cooperation and reaffirming their shared resolve to deepen the India–Uzbekistan strategic partnership.
Describing the conversation as “fruitful”, PM Modi said they discussed developments in trade, connectivity, health, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. “We reviewed the progress achieved in key areas of our bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed our shared resolve to further advance the India–Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership,” he posted on X.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, President Mirziyoyev conveyed greetings to PM Modi and the people of India ahead of the country’s 79th Independence Day. Both leaders also exchanged views on regional and global matters of mutual interest, reiterating their commitment to strengthen centuries-old ties between India and Central Asia.
Longstanding Bilateral Engagement
India was among the first countries to recognise Uzbekistan’s state sovereignty after its independence. Over the years, high-level exchanges have reinforced the partnership. PM Modi visited Tashkent in July 2015 and June 2016, and Samarkand in September 2022. President Mirziyoyev visited India in October 2018 and January 2019.
The two leaders held a virtual summit in December 2020, and President Mirziyoyev joined the first India–Central Asia Summit, initiated by PM Modi, in January 2022. They also met on the sidelines of COP28 in Dubai in December 2023 and the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.
