PM To Join Independence Day Celebrations In Malé; MoUs & Strategic Agreements On Agenda
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commenced a two-day trip to the Maldives after wrapping up his visit to the United Kingdom. This visit to the Maldives holds significance as it is his first trip since diplomatic ties were strained due to the “India Out” movement led by certain Maldivian political figures and President Muizzu’s pro-China inclination.
Importantly, President Muizzu extended an invitation to PM Modi to be the chief guest at the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations. The timing of the visit is also symbolic, coinciding with the 60th year of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.
“A historic UK visit concludes, boosting India-UK trade and economic relations. PM Narendra Modi departs for the second segment of his tour—to the Maldives,” the Ministry of External Affairs posted on X.
The trip is aimed not just at deepening bilateral engagement, but also at reinforcing India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy across the Indian Ocean region.
