Prime Minister Modi Emphasises ‘Swadeshi’ Amid Global Trade Challenges and Uncertain Markets

Calls for nationwide push to sell and support Made-in-India products

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday made a strong appeal to traders and shopkeepers across the country to commit themselves to the cause of “Swadeshi” by exclusively promoting and selling products made in India. Speaking during a public event in Varanasi, he underlined that with the world currently facing a climate of economic uncertainty, choosing Indian-made goods would be the most genuine form of service to the nation.

The Prime Minister’s remarks align with the government’s broader push for self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. This campaign is focused on bolstering domestic manufacturing, reducing dependence on foreign imports, and reinforcing India’s economic foundation amid shifting global trade dynamics and evolving tariff regimes—especially in light of recent trade measures taken by countries such as the United States.

Modi highlighted that the idea of Swadeshi is deeply rooted in India’s history, especially during the freedom movement when self-reliance was seen as a form of national assertion. Reviving that spirit, he urged the business community to prioritise stocking and promoting Indian-made goods, which in turn would energise local industries, generate substantial employment—particularly for the youth—and help retain economic value within the country.

Encouraging people to become conscious consumers, the Prime Minister said, “Every time we buy something, we should ask ourselves—was this made by the hands of an Indian? If it was made with the sweat and skill of our people, then it is truly Swadeshi. We should adopt the motto of ‘Vocal for Local’.”

With India aiming to become the world’s third-largest economy, Modi’s pitch is seen as a timely intervention—particularly as the festive and wedding seasons approach. Experts believe the message could spark increased consumer support for Indian products and deepen the connection between Indian buyers and domestic producers, giving a much-needed boost to local enterprises in a globally competitive environment.
