Seven Dead After Wall Collapse in Delhi’s Jaitpur During Heavy Rain

Additional DCP (South-East) Aishwarya Sharma said the wall was located next to an old temple and a group of jhuggies occupied by scrap dealers.

Seven persons, including two children, lost their lives on Saturday morning when a boundary wall collapsed in the Hari Nagar area of Jaitpur, South-East Delhi, following heavy overnight rain.

As per the Delhi Police, the 100-foot-long wall fell onto nearby jhuggies, trapping eight residents inside. All of them were rescued from the debris and rushed to the hospital; however, seven succumbed to their injuries.

The deceased included three men, two women, and two girls, who were living in temporary huts on a vacant plot.

Additional DCP (South-East) Aishwarya Sharma stated, “The wall collapsed due to the rain. Rescue teams recovered the trapped residents and evacuated the remaining jhuggies to prevent any further mishap.”

Delhi witnessed heavy rainfall since early morning, leading to severe waterlogging and traffic jams in several localities, including Vasant Kunj, R.K. Puram, Connaught Place, and Minto Bridge.

Traffic movement was slow near AIIMS and the Barapullah flyover, while flooding was also reported on Panchkuian Marg.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms with rain for Saturday, with the day’s maximum temperature likely to touch 36°C and the minimum to remain around 27°C. Rain is expected to continue in the Capital till August 12.
