In temples, the order of performing various rituals and worship is often guided by tradition. The general practice for conducting the Navagraha (Nine Planets) worship is as follows:
- First, the main deity should be worshipped: The primary deity of the temple should be worshipped first. This is considered the most important part of the worship, where the devotee offers prayers and seeks blessings. After the darshan (viewing) of the main deity, a sense of spiritual connection and fulfillment is achieved.
- Next, the goddess (Ambaal) and the associated deities (Parivarams) should be worshipped: After the darshan of the main deity, the goddess (Ambaal) and other associated deities of the temple are worshipped. This includes praying at the separate shrines or sanctums dedicated to the divine consorts and attendants.
- Lastly, the Navagraha, Sandikeswarar, and Bhairavar should be worshipped: After the main deities and goddess are honored, the Navagraha (the nine planets), Sandikeswarar (a form of Shiva), and Bhairavar (a fierce form of Shiva) are worshipped. It is traditionally considered auspicious to perform the Navagraha worship last, as it is believed to bring completeness to the prayer process. This sequence is thought to align all the energies in the temple and ensure holistic blessings for the devotee.
By following this order, the worship is seen as more comprehensive, ensuring a balanced connection with both the main deity and other divine energies in the temple.
