Sonia Bermúdez Named New Head Coach of Spain Women’s Football Team
The Spanish Football Federation on Monday (August 11) announced the appointment of former Barcelona forward Sonia Bermúdez as the new head coach of Spain’s women’s national football team.
Bermúdez takes over from Montse Tomé, whose contract expired following Spain’s defeat to England on penalties in the Women’s Euro 2025 final last month. She steps into the senior role after previously managing the Spanish Under-23 side.
Tomé had been appointed after Spain’s Women’s World Cup-winning coach Jorge Vilda was dismissed in September 2023 over his support for ex-federation president Luis Rubiales in the controversy surrounding his forced kiss on player Jenni Hermoso.
During Tomé’s tenure, Spain won the Nations League in 2024 and finished fourth at the Paris Olympics.
Barcelona’s December Clash with Villarreal Set for Miami
In a separate announcement, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said the La Liga fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona, scheduled for December, will be moved to Miami — subject to approval from UEFA and FIFA.
If approved, the match, set for December 20 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, will mark the first time a fixture from one of Europe’s top domestic leagues is played in the United States. While the Spanish Super Cup has previously been held abroad, notably in Saudi Arabia, this would be a historic first for a La Liga league game.
