Suryanar Kovil Atheenam Marriage Controversy – Why did it leave the Math?
He has left the Math after handing over his responsibilities to the Charities Department, Kumbakonam Suryanar Kovil Adheenam.
Atheenam left the mutt due to opposition from local residents, the mutt administrators said.

Why did Suryanar Kovil Adhinam withdraw from the administrative responsibilities of the Math?
Suryanar Temple Adheenam in Kumbakonam is one of the Saiva monasteries in Tamil Nadu. Sankaralinga Desika Swami was the 27th Sannithan of this Mutt.
After he attained perfection (death) in 2022, he was installed as the 28th Adhinam of Mahalinga Desika Bandara Swami. Prior to this, he was a thambiran at Thiruvavaduthurai Atheena Math.
Marriage dispute
Mahalinga Desika Swami, who has been in charge of Suryanar temple for the past two years, recently got married to Hemasree from Bengaluru. He has registered it in the state of Karnataka as per the Hindu Marriage Act.
“Yes. It is true that I am married. I got married openly with the knowledge of four people,” Adeenam explained.
He also said that he did not act against the rules of the monastery.
But Swaminatha Desika Swami, the srikaryam (administrator of the Atheenam ) of the Suryanar temple, alleged that the marriage was held to steal property worth around Rs 1,000 crore belonging to the mutt.
“According to the tradition of Suriyanar Kovil Mutt, one can take austerity from a household. But one should not accept austerity after austerity. Adhenam has violated this tradition,” he said.
Last week, officials of the Hindu Religious Charities Department conducted an in-person investigation at the monastery to create controversy over the matter.
Speaking to them, Suryanar Kovil Adheenam said, ‘Hemashri will only look after the administrative responsibilities of the ashram located in Karnataka. He explained that he will not claim the Math in Tamil Nadu. Suryanar Kovil Aadeenam had said.
Adeenam’s decision
In this case, on Monday (November 11), posters were put up in Kumbakonam against Suryanar Temple Atheenath. Following this, on Tuesday (November 12), local people gathered in front of the monastery.

They have raised slogans asking Adeena to step down as he violated the traditions of the mutt. Police were deployed there to prevent any untoward incident.
As a result of this there was a tense situation, he said that he would resign from the administrative responsibilities of the monastery and handed over the keys of the monastery to the authorities of the charity department.
Sreekaryam Swaminatha Swami of the Suryanar Temple Mutt said, “As people gathered in front of the mutt, Aadeenam announced that he would step down from the administrative charge so as not to ‘damage the property’.”
“At that time, the officials of the charity department asked to hand over the administrative responsibility of the Math to Thiruvavaduthurai Atheena. ‘I don’t want to give it to them. “I will hand it over to the charity department,” Adeenam said.
What does Suryanar Kovil Adhinam say?
Regarding his resignation from the administrative responsibilities of the Math, Suryanar Kovil Adhinam Mahalinga Desika Swami said, “I have handed over the administrative responsibilities to the Charities Department as some people have created unnecessary problems in the locality.”
But Atheenam says that Suryanar Temple continues as Atheenam, “Behind this issue is the instigation of Thiruvavaduthurai Atheenam.”
Narrating the matter, Atheenam said, “Most of the assets of the Suriyanar Temple Math are under the control of Thiruvavaduthurai Atheena Math. They have taken action against me as they have tried to recover it legally. I will face this legally.”
When asked about the Athenaeums meeting to decide, he only replied, “It’s a routine thing.”

However, denying these allegations, General Manager of Thiruvavaduthurai Atheena Math Rajendran says, “Our job is only to appoint the Atheena of Suriyanar Temple Math. We have nothing to do with its management.”
Stating that Suryanar Kovil Adeenam has been complaining about them since the beginning, Rajendran said, “Local people have raised a dispute against Adeenam. We heard about it and went there. He is saying something to hide the controversy against him. We have nothing to do with it.”
