Kanyakumari Congress MLA Rajesh Kumar Sentenced to 3 Months Imprisonment for Obstructing Government Officials
Rajesh Kumar, the Congress MLA from Killiyoor constituency and a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, has been sentenced to three months of imprisonment and a fine of ₹100 by the Nagercoil Magistrate Court in a case involving the obstruction of government officials.
The case pertains to an incident in the Midalam area of Kanyakumari West zone, where government officials had gone to retrieve encroached government (poramboke) land. It was alleged that Rajesh Kumar, along with his supporters, obstructed and assaulted the officials during the operation.
Following the incident, a complaint was filed at the Karungal Police Station. Based on the complaint, a case was registered under various sections, including issuing death threats and preventing government servants from performing their duties. A total of six individuals were named in the FIR.
The case was being heard at the Nagercoil Judicial Magistrate Court. On April 21, 2025, Government Additional Public Prosecutor Hercules appeared on behalf of the state. Judge Hasan Mohammed delivered the verdict after hearing both sides.
Out of the six accused, three had passed away during the course of the trial, and the case against them was closed. The remaining three, including Rajesh Kumar, were found guilty.
The judge sentenced Rajesh Kumar and the other two convicts to three months of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹100 each. As per current legal provisions, this sentence will not disqualify Rajesh Kumar from holding his MLA position.
Sources close to Rajesh Kumar have stated that he intends to appeal the verdict at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
