Every year, ASER publishes a study report on the state of education in the country. This year’s ASER report on the state of education was released last Tuesday.

According to the 2011 census, 30 villages from each district and twenty families from each village were selected for this study.

Nearly 6.5 lakh children were surveyed in 605 villages across the country. The study was conducted on 28,984 students aged three to 16 in 876 villages in 30 districts of Tamil Nadu.

The report states that the learning ability of children studying in government schools has increased compared to private schools. In particular, the reading level of children studying in third grade has improved significantly and has reached 27.1 percent. In particular, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha and Maharashtra have seen a rise of more than 10 per cent in children’s reading ability.

In Tamil Nadu, the report said that 8th grade students are unable to read 2nd grade textbooks.

In rural Tamil Nadu, 35 per cent of 8th grade students and 64 per cent of 5th grade students are unable to read 2nd grade textbooks, the report said.

The report said that Tamil Nadu is lagging behind Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Punjab and Kerala, while Karnataka and Telangana are lagging behind Tamil Nadu.

In a study on digital literacy, 90 per cent of children aged 14 to 16 said that they can use a smartphone.

Nationally, 36.2 percent of boys and 26.9 percent of girls own smartphones. About 82.2 percent of children use smartphones for educational activities.

The ASER report also points out that parents discriminate between men and women in buying smartphones. About 82.2 percent of children use smartphones for educational activities.

However, the rate of students in Tamil Nadu using smartphones for educational purposes is much lower than the national average. At the same time, Tamil Nadu students know how to block social media accounts and stay safe online.

Compared to other states, reading skills among private school students in Tamil Nadu have increased compared to previous years.

The report also reported that teacher and student attendance in government primary schools has increased. Last year, the average student attendance increased by 75.9 percent, and the average teacher attendance increased to 87.5 percent, the report said.

The reading level of third-grade children has improved significantly to 27.1 percent, while the reading proficiency of fourth-grade children has increased to 48.8 percent. The development of arithmetic skills has also shown an improvement of 30 percent. In particular, the proportion of third-grade children with basic subtraction skills was 25.9 percent four years ago. This has increased to 34 percent this year.

The study suggests that there is some progress in basic textbook reading and arithmetic skills among third- and fifth-grade students in rural India.

The central government is focusing on reducing the gaps in improving teaching and learning practices for children. In 2021, the central government launched the Nipun Bharat Mission. This is a program to provide all children with comprehension and arithmetic skills by the end of second grade.

By 2027, the central government plans to ensure universal basic literacy and numeracy skills for Indian children. Between 2021 and 2025, Rs 9,235 crore has been released under the Samagra Shiksha Yojana.

Rs 2,000 crore is allocated annually for teacher training, assessments and high-quality learning tools. The ASER report has revealed significant improvement in both reading and numeracy skills in government schools.
