The teaching body of Delhi University has strongly opposed the teaching of Manu Smriti in the law course.

A proposal to teach ‘Manu Smriti’ (Laws of Manu) to undergraduate law students of Delhi University is to be discussed in the council meeting of the university today. A section of the teachers’ organization has strongly opposed the project.

The Board of Legal Education has approved the change in the syllabus of first year and third year undergraduate law students earlier from the top management of Delhi University. Accordingly, the proposal to teach Manu Smriti in the first semester and sixth semester has been unanimously approved in the Legal Education Course Committee meeting held on June 24.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Teachers’ Front (SDTF), a left-wing pro-teacher organization, has strongly opposed the plan. In a letter written to the vice-chancellor of the university on behalf of the organization, it has been said that Manu Smriti is spreading backward ideas about women’s rights and backward communities, which is completely against the progressive education system. It is also noted in the letter that Manusmriti is against the basic structure of our Constitution and the principles of the Constitution of India.
