‘This Is Just The Beginning’: Luka Doncic’s Stunning Transformation Highlights His Drive for NBA Glory with Lakers

Doncic, 26, has dedicated himself to intense training, reshaping his body for the upcoming season. He is also anticipated to agree to a four-year contract extension with the Lakers.

At just 26 years old, Luka Doncic has already assembled a Hall of Fame-caliber career: five All-NBA First Team honors, 82 career triple-doubles (ranking seventh all-time).

Yet, a recurring storyline remained — his conditioning.

Despite his elite numbers, Doncic’s physical shape often attracted more discussion than his on-court dominance. Observers frequently noted his weight changes during the offseason, and last August, he was openly mocked for appearing “overweight” in a charity match. When the Mavericks dealt him to the Lakers in February, speculation continued — talk of his off-court indulgences, from beer and hookah to even suggestions he was using Ozempic.

However, this offseason, the narrative has shifted — significantly.

Doncic opened up in a Men’s Health interview, sharing that he immediately began two-a-day training sessions following the Lakers’ first-round playoff elimination by Minnesota.

“Obviously, I’m very competitive. This summer just felt different, you know. It gave me that extra push to improve.”

“If I quit now,” Doncic said of his demanding offseason program, “then it was all for nothing.”

The Slovenian standout also admitted he didn’t fully comprehend the physical toll of the NBA during his formative seasons, which contributed to his conditioning issues early in his career.

“When I entered the NBA, I was 18,” he said. “Honestly, I didn’t really know what to expect during those first four or five years. Then I realized, ‘I need to commit to this.’”

“In the NBA, you’re traveling constantly. You’re rarely home,” he continued. “And for me, returning home after the season means everything. I get to be with my family and friends. So, yeah, it’s definitely tough.”

But Doncic is now embracing the grind. His fitness strategy has shifted from reactive to proactive — now forming the core of his game.

“Of course, I want to be the best version of myself, and that starts with self-care,” he said. “This season, with my teammates, I think we made great progress. But this is only the beginning. I have to keep moving forward. No stopping now.”

Lakers All-In on a Reenergized Leader

As LeBron James approaches the closing chapter of his legendary career, the Lakers are ushering in a new era — with Doncic as the focal point. And they’re supporting that vision with a long-term investment.

According to recent reports, Doncic is expected to ink a four-year extension with the Lakers once he becomes eligible on August 2.

With his renewed dedication to fitness and growth, the Lakers appear ready to confidently commit to Doncic — someone they now see not just as the face of the franchise, but possibly the league itself for years ahead.
