This is not necessary in Tamil Nadu …. If this project is allowed, it will turn into ‘Desert’ …. Edappadiyar

Opposition leader Edappadi Palanisamy has urged the Tamil Nadu government not to allow hydrocarbon projects in the Ariyalur district.
It was DMK MP and senior executive DR Palu who spearheaded several projects to desert the Tanjore rice field. Upon learning of the discovery of methane gas in the Rajasthan desert, the then Joint Minister of Petroleum, DR Palu, decided to implement the project in the delta areas of Tamil Nadu.
Opposition leader Edappadi Palanisamy said in a statement that it was DMK MP and senior executive DR Balu who had instigated several projects to desert the Tanjore granary. Upon learning of the discovery of methane gas in the Rajasthan desert, the then Joint Minister of Petroleum, DR Palu, decided to implement the project in the delta areas of Tamil Nadu and obtained the approval of the Central Government in 2010. He said this in his interview. It has appeared in the media and in the press. They have confessed that it was brought by the DMK.
Similarly, in 2011 the DMK government gave permission to the Great Eastern Energy Corporation for 4 years to construct a deep well and start research work. The MoU was signed in the presence of the current Chief Minister Stalin, who was also the Deputy Chief Minister.
In addition, the environmental permit for oil and natural gas wells in Tamil Nadu was first issued in 2008 during the DMK rule in Nagapattinam district. Similarly, 7 wells were sanctioned in Cuddalore, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts in 2010 and 5 wells in Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts in 2011 under the DMK regime.
However, in 2014, Jayalalithaa set up a panel of experts to study the impact of the coal bed-based methane extraction project in the delta areas. We have protected the farmers of the Cauvery Delta District by introducing and passing a separate law in the Legislature for the Protected Cauvery Delta Agricultural Zone.
A high-level study group was set up on August 9, 2019 to study and report to the government on the impact of oil and natural gas wells. When I was the Chief Minister I was ordered not to approve any research work until the committee submits its report. It is learned that ONGC has written a letter to the Tamil Nadu government seeking permission for a hydrocarbon project in Ariyalur district. Edappadi Palanisamy has said that the Tamil Nadu government should express its strong opposition to this.
