Three-Language Policy: How Much is the DMK Government Spending on the Development of Other Languages? CM Must Clarify – Annamalai
BJP Tamil Nadu State President Annamalai has raised concerns regarding the Tamil Nadu government’s expenditure on language development and the implementation of the three-language policy. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), he questioned the state’s language education policies and the allocation of funds for different languages.
Annamalai stated:
The National Education Policy (NEP) emphasizes the importance of multilingual education, ensuring that students across India have the opportunity to learn multiple languages. In Tamil Nadu, many private schools, including those run by the family of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and DMK supporters, provide opportunities to learn multiple languages. However, this privilege is denied to students studying in government schools, which is unfair.
The three-language policy is meant to offer students the freedom to choose and learn multiple languages. However, Chief Minister Stalin falsely portrays this as “Hindi imposition.” The reality is that Hindi imposition occurs only in private schools run by DMK members, not in government institutions.
In today’s Assembly session, the Chief Minister once again accused the three-language policy of imposing Hindi, distorting the actual intent of the policy. By doing so, the DMK government is indirectly ensuring that only wealthy students can learn multiple languages, while students in government schools are deprived of this opportunity.
Additionally, budget allocations for language development raise further concerns. The School Education Department’s budget request reveals that in the 2024-25 financial year, ₹11 crore was spent on Sanskrit language development, while ₹10 crore has been allocated for 2025-26. On the other hand, ₹13 crore was spent on other languages last year, and ₹14 crore has been allocated this year.
In light of this, the Tamil Nadu government must clarify how much it is investing in the development of other languages besides Sanskrit. Transparency in language education funding is crucial for ensuring equal learning opportunities for all students.
Thus, BJP State President Annamalai has urged the Chief Minister to provide a clear explanation on this matter.
