Tirtha Vari Utsavam (holy water procession) held at the Karpaga Vinayagar Temple in Pillaiyar Patti, Sivaganga district, in celebration of Tamil New Year.
Pillaiyar Patti, located near Tirupattur in Sivaganga district, is home to the famous Karpaga Vinayagar Temple. The festival begins early in the morning at around 5:00 AM, with the opening of the temple gates. Following this, a special Abishekam (ritualistic bathing) will be performed on the deity, and Deepaaradhana (lamp worship) will be offered.
Afterward, the Utsava Murthi (festival idol) of Karpaga Vinayagar will be taken on a silver mouse vehicle, where the Lord will give darshan to the devotees. Around 9:00 AM, there will be rituals such as the Angusa Thevar and Astra Thevar idol processions, followed by the Tirtha Vari Utsavam, where devotees receive holy water.
In the evening, at around 6:00 PM, there will be a Panchangam reading and another procession of Karpaga Vinayagar on the Mushika Vahanam (mouse vehicle) and Rishaba Vahanam (bull vehicle), along with Chandrashekara Gowri Ambaal. Special rituals and darshan will be conducted in the temple courtyard.
The temple authorities have made arrangements for the devotees, including Annadhanam (free food), drinking water facilities, medical assistance, and shaded waiting areas for the devotees to stand in line and worship the deity. Additionally, parking facilities for vehicles, including cars and vans, have been provided for devotees coming from outside the district.
The arrangements for this grand festival have been made by the Narthasanthupatti Kumaraappan Chettiyar and Karaikudi Sith. Palaniyappan Chettiyar, who are part of the temple’s administrative lineage.
This event not only marks the Tamil New Year but also serves as a cultural and spiritual gathering, offering a sense of devotion, community, and cultural continuity.
