Trump Again Claims Credit for India-Pakistan Ceasefire During Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Pact Signing

US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he played a key role in defusing tensions between India and Pakistan in May, preventing what he described as a potential “nuclear conflict.” Speaking at the White House during the signing ceremony of a peace accord between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Trump said he “got things settled” between New Delhi and Islamabad, adding that “five or six planes” were shot down during the confrontation.

After the ceremony, the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan announced that they would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in their agreement.

At the event, Trump said, “Today’s signing follows our success with India and Pakistan. They were going at it big. And they were great leaders that came together just prior to what would have been a tremendous conflict — a nuclear conflict probably.”

This is not the first time Trump has made such claims. Since May 10, when tensions eased between the two neighbours, he has repeatedly suggested that he mediated the truce. Indian officials, however, have consistently rejected these assertions.

Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh clarified on Saturday that the ceasefire was entirely India’s decision and not the result of any third-party intervention. Speaking at a lecture in Bengaluru, he said the conflict was “a high-tech war” in which India inflicted severe damage on Pakistan’s military infrastructure within 80–90 hours. This, he said, forced Pakistan to seek a truce through backchannel communication with India’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO).

The Air Chief also confirmed that the Indian Air Force shot down at least five Pakistani fighter jets and one large aircraft, in addition to striking key airbases and command centres. According to him, India ended the hostilities on its own terms, having achieved its military objectives.
