Trump, Xi Jinping Expected To Meet During October APEC Summit In South Korea: Report
US President Trump might travel to China prior to the APEC summit or hold talks with Xi Jinping in South Korea. The two nations are in discussions to resolve the ongoing tariff conflict.
US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a visit to China ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, scheduled between October 30 and November 1, or alternatively, he may meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC gathering in South Korea, according to the South China Morning Post on Sunday, citing several sources.
Both countries have been engaged in negotiations to bring an end to the escalating tariff dispute, which has impacted global trade and disrupted international supply chains.
Trump has been pushing to levy tariffs on nearly all goods entering the US from abroad, stating that the move would boost domestic manufacturing. However, critics argue this would raise prices on a wide range of consumer products for American households.
He has proposed a standard base tariff of 10 percent on imports from all countries, with even steeper tariffs for certain “problematic” nations—particularly China, where import duties currently peak at 55%.
According to Reuters, Trump has set August 12 as the deadline for the US and China to reach a long-term trade agreement on tariffs.
The most recent senior-level dialogue between the two countries occurred on July 11, when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held what both parties described as constructive and positive discussions in Malaysia regarding the path forward in trade talks.
Rubio mentioned at the time that Trump had received an invitation to visit China for talks with Xi, noting that both leaders “want it to happen.”
On Friday, China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao expressed a desire to return US-China trade relations to a more stable state, emphasizing that recent discussions in Europe demonstrated that a trade war is unnecessary.
Earlier this month, Secretary Rubio told the press in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that there was a “high probability” of a meeting between US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. While he didn’t provide a specific date, he confirmed that there is “strong willingness on both sides” to hold the meeting.
