Tsunami Warning… Powerful Waves Strike Alaska, Hawaiian Coastlines; Power Grid Disrupted in Russia
Tsunami Alert in Russia, Japan, US Following Kamchatka Earthquake Today: A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, leading to tsunami warnings and evacuation efforts across multiple regions, as per local officials and international monitoring agencies.
The earthquake, which was initially recorded as a magnitude 8.0 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), was later upgraded to 8.8.
It generated tsunami waves rising up to 4 metres (approximately 13 feet) in several parts of Kamchatka, according to Sergei Lebedev, the regional minister for emergency situations. He strongly advised residents to avoid coastal zones due to the persistent danger.
The quake also led to tsunami advisories being issued throughout the Pacific region. American authorities issued alerts for coastal zones in Alaska, while Hawaii was placed under a low-level tsunami watch.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency too issued a tsunami advisory, cautioning that waves up to 3 metres in height could strike the country’s Pacific shores.
“Tsunamis will come in succession. Do not go into the sea or move towards the coast until the alert is cancelled,” the Japanese agency said. An earlier version of the advisory had forecast wave heights of up to one metre.
