UEFA Imposes €148,000 Fine on PSG Over UCL Final Fan Unrest: Detailed Charges Explained

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been fined €148,000 by UEFA for disciplinary breaches committed by fans following the club’s UEFA Champions League final triumph over Inter Milan. The violations include pitch invasion, use of pyrotechnics, and destruction of property.

PSG’s landmark Champions League win in May was marred by unruly fan behaviour, prompting strict action from UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, which announced the sanctions this week.

The Ligue 1 champions registered a commanding 5–0 victory over Inter at Munich’s Allianz Arena, clinching their maiden European title. But the celebrations that ensued quickly escalated into chaos, both inside the stadium and in various parts of France.

Violations Include Pitch Invasion and Use of Fireworks

Right after the final whistle, thousands of PSG supporters stormed the pitch, particularly from the end behind the goal. Security personnel were unable to hold back the crowd as fans breached barriers to reach the players and collect souvenirs. Some supporters ripped out pieces of turf, while others dismantled parts of the goalposts.

UEFA cited several disciplinary issues: a mass pitch invasion, use of fireworks and smoke devices, throwing of objects, vandalism of stadium infrastructure, and display of an inappropriate banner.

In total, PSG was fined €148,000 (approximately ₹1.35 crore), with the biggest penalties imposed for the pitch invasion and use of pyrotechnics.

Detailed Penalty Breakdown by UEFA

  • €100,000 for the pitch invasion and use of fireworks and smoke bombs
  • €30,000 for hurling objects
  • €10,000 for displaying an offensive message
  • €8,000 for damage to property

Additionally, UEFA imposed a suspended ban on the sale of away match tickets to PSG fans for one UEFA fixture. This suspension will only be enforced if similar incidents occur within the next two years.

Historic Victory Overshadowed by Disorder

PSG’s emphatic win marked a defining chapter in the club’s history, achieving Champions League glory after years of significant financial backing and several failed attempts. However, the euphoria was soon tainted by violence and public disorder, both in Munich and in cities across France.

Post-match celebrations in France turned chaotic. In Paris, the Champs-Élysées became the focal point of celebrations, which later spiralled into clashes between fans and law enforcement. Fireworks, loud cheering, and honking vehicles filled the streets, but soon the festivities gave way to unrest.

According to the French Interior Ministry, a total of 559 people were detained during the night-long celebrations across the country, with about 500 arrests in Paris alone. Authorities also confirmed two deaths linked to the disturbances.
