US President Trump has ordered a halt to all foreign aid to Bangladesh. Donald Trump took office as the new US president on the 20th. On his first day in office, he issued several executive orders, including a halt to funding for the World Health Organization.
He has also ordered a 90-day freeze on foreign aid and various international aid programs. The only exceptions are military aid to Israel and Egypt. The order requires a review of all foreign aid programs and a report to President Trump within 85 days.
Based on this, the US State Department ordered an immediate halt to all foreign aid last Friday. Based on this order, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has suspended its financial assistance to the interim government of Bangladesh led by Muhammad Yunus. The Bangladeshi government has been duly informed in this regard.
Bangladesh is the largest recipient of US aid among Asian countries, and this order is expected to be a major crisis for the country’s government.
