Rescue efforts resumed on Thursday in the high-altitude regions of Dharali in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, where a cloudburst triggered sudden flash floods.

The cloudburst occurred in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river on August 6, leading to devastating floods that either damaged or washed away several houses.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted review meetings at the Disaster Control Room, assessing the ongoing rescue and relief efforts in the affected zones. He also visited flood-hit locations and interacted with affected locals.

CM Dhami has approved Rs 1.3 lakh each from the State Disaster Relief Fund for 15 families in Sainji village, whose houses were completely destroyed in the flood.

While five bodies have been recovered so far, the CM confirmed that 274 people have been successfully rescued.

Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan said some individuals may still be stranded in Gangotri, adding that the rescue operation will go on until all are accounted for.

Maharashtra Minister Yogesh Ramdas Kadam informed that 151 tourists from the state are stranded, of whom 30–31 are currently untraceable. Efforts are ongoing to locate and shift them to safety.

Chinook and Mi-17 helicopters are being deployed to airlift stranded civilians. Around 180–200 tourists in Gangotri are being provided food, shelter, and medical support by the armed forces.

Teams from SDRF, NDRF, ITBP, and the Indian Army are engaged in large-scale rescue operations in Dharali, Harsil, and other remote villages.

Multiple roads in the area, including the Ganganani–Harsil stretch, have been severely damaged due to landslides caused by the cloudburst. The Gangotri Highway near Papargad has been cleared, and repair work is progressing near Ganganani where a bridge was washed away.
