Vanchinathan (1886 – June 17, 1911) was a Tamil Nadu revolutionary who fought against British rule. Tirunelveli Collector Ash Durai was shot dead and later shot himself.
Vanchinathan was born in 1886 in Red Fort, Tirunelveli district, the son of Raghupathi Iyer and Rukmini Ammal. His given name was Sankaran but he was also known as Vanchi.
After completing his schooling at Vanchi Red Fort, he studied at Thirunal Maharaja College, Thiruvananthapuram for his BA. While still in college, he married Ponnammala, the eldest daughter of Munneer Pallam Sitaramaiah. After graduating from college, he worked at the Punalur Cathedral.
The nationwide struggle against the British government was at its height that day. W. E. Vanchi also intensified the liberation struggle with the stage speeches of Chidambaram Pillai and Subramania Siva.
In French-occupied Pondicherry, aid was provided to extremists operating against the British in India. He was in contact with the militants there. Over time he withdrew from his government service and became active on the path of revolution. With friends, he convened secret meetings to overthrow the British rule. He also made friends serious.

At 10.45 am on June 17, 1911, at the Maniyachi railway junction, Tirunelveli Collector Ashthurai was sitting with his wife in the first class compartment of a train bound for Kodaikanal. Vanchi, who was browsing outside at the time, shot and killed Collector Ash Durai, who was sitting in the train, and shot himself with the same gun.
During Vanchi’s autopsy, he wrote a letter in his underwear stating that the collector had been shot dead and that more than 3,000 militants were with him in Chennai. Vanchi Iyer was written as Red Fort. The murder case of Tirunelveli Collector Ash is significant in the history of the Indian liberation struggle.
Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi called the Vanchi-Maniyachi railway junction the Maniachchi railway station where Vanchi died. A statue of him was also unveiled at the Red Fort where Vanchi was born. A memorial hall has been set up for him at Red Fort and it was opened on December 23, 2013.
