‘Victory Of All Patriots’: Pragya Singh Thakur Responds To Acquittal In 2008 Malegaon Blast Case
The NIA special court in Mumbai on Thursday acquitted all seven individuals accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, including Pragya Singh Thakur.
Former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur on Saturday described her acquittal in the 2008 Malegaon blast case as a triumph of “Sanatan Dharma” and “all patriots”.
The verdict came from the special NIA court in Mumbai on Thursday, which cleared all seven accused, including Thakur, of all charges related to the case.
“The Congress, along with all atheists who coined terms like saffron terrorism and Hindu terrorism, has been humiliated. The victory of saffron, Hindutva, and Sanatan Dharma marks the success of all Sanatanis and patriots. Many congratulations,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter).
While delivering the judgment, the court observed that the prosecution was unable to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt, resulting in the acquittal of all the accused, including Pragya Singh Thakur, Major (Retd) Ramesh Upadhyay, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhankar Dhar Dwivedi (also known as Shankaracharya), and Sameer Kulkarni.
The court also concluded that there was no evidence to suggest that explosives were either stored or assembled at the residence of Prasad Purohit, another key accused.
The Maharashtra government has been instructed by the court to compensate the victims of the blast, awarding ₹2 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 to those who sustained injuries.
Throughout the course of the trial, statements from 323 prosecution witnesses and 8 defence witnesses were examined before the final judgment was delivered.
All the accused were acquitted of charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Arms Act, and other related laws.
The case relates to a bomb explosion on 29 September 2008, when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque at Bhikku Chowk in Malegaon, killing six individuals and injuring 95 others.
