Violence Erupts During Protests in Nepal – Two Killed, Several Injured

In Nepal, monarchy supporters and republic supporters attempted to hold protests simultaneously in Bhrikuti Mandap, a key area in Kathmandu. Fearing clashes between the two groups, the police intervened to disperse both sides and maintain order.

Clashes and Police Intervention

Initially, both groups demonstrated peacefully, voicing their demands. However, as tensions escalated, slogans were raised against the opposing factions, leading to heightened unrest. The situation worsened when protesters attempted to move towards the restricted New Baneshwor area without authorization.

In response to the breach of restrictions, police deployed water cannons and tear gas shells to control the situation and disperse the protesters.

Casualties and Injuries

Amidst the violent clashes, two monarchy supporters tragically lost their lives, while more than 15 individuals sustained injuries. Medical officials reported that some of the injured were in critical condition.

Political Background – The Struggle Between Monarchy and Republic

Nepal was under monarchical rule until 2008 when prolonged protests led to the establishment of a republican system. Dissatisfaction with the monarchy had been growing among the people, ultimately resulting in the decision to transition to democracy.

However, a section of the population continues to advocate for the reinstatement of the monarchy, leading to ongoing political tensions in the country. The recent protests serve as yet another example of the deep-rooted divide between monarchy supporters and republicans in Nepal.
