‘We Want Justice, Please Help’: Wife Of Assam Man Who Went Missing After Mid-Air Assault On IndiGo Flight

In the quiet village of Lathigaon in Kathigorah, Cachar district, Assam, anguish and confusion gripped the family of Hussain Ahmed Majumdar, who mysteriously went missing after being assaulted mid-air during IndiGo Flight 6E 138 from Mumbai to Kolkata.

His wife, Sufiana Begum, shared with News18 the emotional turmoil the family went through when they didn’t find Hussain at Kumbhirgram Airport despite waiting to receive him after his scheduled arrival on August 1.

“His last call came from the airport. He said the security check was done and told me to come receive him. The flight landed at 1:45 PM. Everyone came out, except him. He just disappeared. We haven’t eaten or slept. I want justice. He’s helpless, and so are we. Please help us,” Sufiana said, fighting back tears.

Hussain, reportedly suffering from a panic attack during the flight, was seen in a now-viral video walking nervously through the aisle while cabin crew tried to calm him. In a shocking moment, a co-passenger suddenly slapped him—an action that was swiftly condemned by other passengers and the crew.

The assailant, identified as Hafijul Rahaman, was handed over to security personnel after the flight landed in Kolkata and was later detained by the police. Meanwhile, Hussain’s family, unaware of the incident at the time, went to receive him in Silchar but were left confused and alarmed when he never arrived.

A missing person complaint was filed. Subsequent investigation revealed that Hussain had neither boarded the connecting flight to Silchar nor exited the Kolkata airport. Eventually, he was found in an unwell state at Barpeta railway station, Assam, and is now being escorted home by authorities.

The situation is even more distressing as Hussain is the sole breadwinner for his family, which includes a three-year-old child and a father battling cancer, Abdul Mannan Majumdar.

In a statement following the outrage, IndiGo Airlines said, “The assault on board Flight 6E 138 was completely unacceptable. The unruly passenger was handed over to security officials in Kolkata. Regulatory agencies have been informed as per standard operating procedures.”

However, IndiGo has not yet clarified whether Hussain Majumdar received any medical care, psychological assistance, or protective support following the traumatic incident, leaving his family and rights activists demanding accountability and justice.
