Who Is Ravi Ghai? Mumbai Tycoon’s Fortune as Granddaughter Gets Engaged to Arjun Tendulkar
Ravi Ghai, a well-known figure in Mumbai’s business and hospitality circles, leads the Graviss Group — a diversified enterprise with a strong presence in both the food and hotel industries.
Famed for his entrepreneurial vision, Ghai is the driving force behind iconic ventures such as the InterContinental Hotel on Marine Drive and the popular dessert brand The Brooklyn Creamery. His family recently made headlines when his granddaughter, Saaniya Chandok, became engaged to Arjun Tendulkar, son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, in an intimate ceremony attended by close relatives and friends.
From Ivy League to Industry Leader
An alumnus of Cornell University’s prestigious School of Hotel Administration, Ghai returned to Mumbai in 1967 to inherit the business reins from his father, Iqbal Krishan (IK) Ghai. Under his leadership, the Graviss Group created celebrated names like Kwality Ice Cream and the Natraj Hotel — now the InterContinental Hotel.
He was instrumental in bringing the Baskin-Robbins brand to the SAARC region and expanding the company’s portfolio. Today, Ghai serves as Non-Executive Chairman of Graviss Hospitality Ltd and holds directorships in Kwality Read Estates Pvt Ltd and Perfect Livestock LLP. Over decades, he has cemented his place as a key player in India’s hospitality and food sectors.
Family Rift with Son Gaurav Ghai
Behind his business accomplishments lies a turbulent personal chapter. According to the Free Press Journal, Ghai filed a complaint with Mumbai’s Marine Drive Police Station accusing his son, Gaurav Ghai, of fraud, forgery, and unlawfully taking control of the company.
He alleged that this takeover occurred during his cancer treatment abroad, claiming his signature was forged on a supplementary Family Settlement Agreement. “My signature was misused for the supplementary family settlement,” Ghai said, asserting that he was the sole owner of Graviss Group before a 2001 restructuring.
Ghai further stated that, due to his weakened health, he signed business documents presented by his son and daughter-in-law without suspicion. By early 2025, his monthly allowance of ₹12.5 lakh reportedly stopped, and by April, he learned that Gaurav had declared himself chairman, seizing full control.
Dispute Headed for Arbitration
Despite the serious accusations, police have not registered an FIR, categorising the matter as a family dispute best addressed through arbitration. The case remains unresolved, adding complexity to the legacy of one of Mumbai’s most prominent business dynasties.
Ghai Family Wealth
The Ghai family’s fortune stems from its Graviss Group holdings, including ownership of The Brooklyn Creamery and the Baskin-Robbins India franchise. Graviss Food Solutions Pvt Ltd, the parent company, posted revenues of ₹624 crore in FY23–24 — a 20% year-on-year increase — with an authorised capital of ₹2.23 crore and paid-up capital of ₹90,100.
Additionally, the family owns the InterContinental Hotel in Mumbai, operating under the $18.43 billion-valued InterContinental Hotels Group as of August 2025.
