Tamil Nadu government has drastically increased the electricity tariff. Electricity charges are going to increase every year from now on. But the monthly electricity bill payment system announced by the DMK government before coming to power has not been implemented. Why can’t monthly readings be implemented? Do you know how long it will take? Check this out.

There are more than 3 crore electricity connections to houses, commercial establishments and industries under the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. The Electricity Board collects the tariff fixed by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Authority for the electricity supplied to these connections once every two months.

In this situation, the Electricity Regulatory Commission announced yesterday that the electricity tariff has been increased from 20 paisa to 55 paisa per unit. According to this, this new electricity tariff hike has come into effect from July 1st.

Accordingly, the electricity bill for household consumption up to 400 units was Rs.4.60 per unit till now. It has now risen by 20 paise to Rs 4.80. For users of 401 to 500 units, the tariff has now been increased by 30 paise to Rs 6.45 per unit from Rs 6.15 per unit.

For users of 501 to 600 units, the tariff has now been increased by 40 paise to Rs 8.55 per unit from Rs 8.15 per unit. For 601 to 800 unit users, it was Rs 9.20 per unit. It has now increased by 45 paise to Rs 9.65.

For unit users between 801 and 1,000, it was Rs 10.20 per unit. It has now risen by 50 paisa and is fixed at Rs.10.70. Users above 1,000 units were charged Rs 11.25 per unit until now. Currently, it has risen by 55 paise and is fixed at Rs.11.80.

Electricity charges for railway and military quarters have increased from Rs 8.15 to Rs 8.55. Cottage and small enterprise electricity charges have increased to Rs 6.95 per unit above 500 kilowatts. Electricity charges for government and government-aided educational institutions, government hospitals have increased from Rs 8.15 to Rs 8.55. For private educational institutes and hostels, it has increased from Rs 8.70 to Rs 9.10 per unit above 500 kilowatts.

Power tariff for powerlooms has increased from Rs 7.65 to Rs 8 per unit above 500 kg watt. Electricity tariff for industrial and IT companies has been increased from Rs 7.65 to Rs 8 per unit. Electricity tariff for agriculture and government seed farms has been increased from Rs 4.60 to Rs 4.80 per unit. Electricity tariff for construction works has increased from Rs.12.25 to Rs.12.85 per kilowatt.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government had categorically denied the two-month-old news that it was going to hike the electricity tariff as a “rumour”. But now the increase in electricity tariff has been implemented from July 1 as promised. It is said that the reason for the increase in electricity tariff is the signing of the Udai Power scheme. After Jayalalitha’s death, the AIADMK government signed the Uday power project. According to these regulations, Tamil Nadu will get the funds for the Central Government only if the electricity tariff is increased once a year. The DMK says that is why the electricity bill is being hiked.

As per the current situation, Tamil Nadu Government has drastically increased the electricity tariff from July 1st. Electricity charges are going to increase every year from now on. But before coming to power, the monthly electricity bill payment system announced by the DMK government in its election manifesto was not implemented. The government could not implement the system of taking monthly readings.

Digital meters are said to be the main reason for this. All homes, shops and institutions should be fitted with smart meters. 3 1/2 crore smart meters need to be replaced if we include almost all the sub meters. Work has started in Chennai and is going on. Once this is done, it is not monthly.. Daily electricity expenditure can be calculated on mobile. But it is said that it will take at least a few more years for digital meters to reach all households. So they say that the monthly electricity bill payment system will not be implemented so easily.
