Subman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of the Indian Test cricket team. The Indian cricket team is set to tour England next month (June) to play a five-match Test series. The first Test between India and England will begin on June 20th in Leeds. The 18-member Indian Test squad for this series was announced yesterday in Mumbai by the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar.

Earlier this month, the then Test captain Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, which raised great anticipation about who would be the next captain. As expected, Subman Gill has been appointed as the new captain.

However, many were disappointed that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was not given the captaincy. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Bumrah led the Indian Test team in Rohit’s absence, and many expected him to be the next captain. But the selection committee chose Gill instead.

Regarding this decision, selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar explained that although Bumrah led the team in Australia, he has not been fully fit for all Test matches. According to team doctors, Bumrah is likely to play only three or four matches in the upcoming England series due to his fitness concerns. Therefore, appointing him as captain and expecting him to lead throughout the series would be difficult.

Agarkar added that Bumrah is a very important player for the team, and even if he plays only three or four Tests, he will contribute significantly to the team’s success. It is better for him to focus on bowling rather than taking on the additional pressure and responsibilities of captaincy. Bumrah himself understands this decision and has accepted it after discussing with the selectors.

This strategic decision reflects the team’s long-term planning and priorities. With Subman Gill as captain, the Indian team is hopeful to perform well in the England series and bring joy to cricket fans worldwide.
