‘Will Soon Be Safest’: Trump to Hold Monday Presser on Crime in Washington DC
US President Donald Trump has announced that he will hold a press conference at the White House on Monday to address the surge in violent crime in Washington, DC.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the upcoming announcement would “essentially stop violent crime” in the US capital. “It has become one of the most dangerous cities in the world. It will soon be one of the safest! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” his statement read.
The announcement comes days after Trump suggested deploying the National Guard to patrol DC’s streets and hinted at taking control of the city’s police force. He said the heightened security would initially last for seven days, with the possibility of extension.
Last Wednesday, Trump threatened to assume charge of local policing after an attempted carjacking left a White House staffer injured. The city has also witnessed several high-profile crimes in recent months — including the assault of a US government official by a group of teenagers last week, the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staff members on 21 May 2025, and the killing of congressional intern Eric Tarpinian-Jachym in a 4 July drive-by shooting.
Monday’s press conference is expected to outline the administration’s security plan and measures to curb violent crime in the capital.
