UP students studying Tamil
With the implementation of the new National Education Policy in Uttar Pradesh last year, the schools there have been introducing the official languages of India, including South Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, as a third language along with the mother tongue Hindi and English.
In Uttar Pradesh, following the implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP) in the previous year, there has been an emphasis on promoting multiple languages in schools. As part of this policy, schools in the state have introduced several Indian languages alongside Hindi and English, ensuring a more inclusive and diverse linguistic education. The key changes are:
- Mother Tongue Hindi: Hindi is prioritized as the primary language for instruction in schools since it is the most widely spoken language in many regions of India.
- English: As an international language, English is taught as a second or third language to facilitate global communication.
- Third Languages: Now, schools are also incorporating other Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and other official languages of India. This move aims to promote the learning of South Indian languages like Tamil, recognizing their importance in Indian cultural and linguistic diversity.
This policy provides Tamil with greater prominence in schools, especially in regions like Uttar Pradesh where there may not be a large Tamil-speaking population. It offers students the opportunity to learn and appreciate multiple languages and cultures, thus fostering mutual understanding and multilingual literacy.
